Key points at a glance
Every year around this time, the same message lands in family WhatsApp groups: "Dhanteras kab hai, and when do we buy?" Last year's answer from your aunt is usually wrong, because the date moves with the tithi. This year the question has a clear answer, and the timing is not hard once you know what to look at. Start with the day's sunrise, sunset and tithi on our free daily Panchang, then read on. We will cover the date, the exact muhurat, a home puja method, what to buy, what to skip, and where astrology helps and where it stops.

Dhanteras 2026 is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival, observed on Friday, 6 November 2026. Families worship Goddess Lakshmi, Kuber and Dhanvantari (the physician of the gods in tradition), light lamps at dusk, and buy something new for the home, usually metal or a puja item.
The word comes from dhan (wealth) and teras (the thirteenth tithi). Many families also clean the house and draw rangoli that day, because Lakshmi is believed to enter a clean, lit home.
The date is 6 November because Trayodashi is active during the evening Pradosh window that day, and that is the rule the festival follows. Here are the timings for New Delhi, taken from Drik Panchang's 2026 listing.
| Detail | Timing (New Delhi, IST) |
|---|---|
| Date | Friday, 6 November 2026 |
| Trayodashi tithi begins | 10:30 AM, 6 November |
| Trayodashi tithi ends | 10:47 AM, 7 November |
| Pradosh Kaal | 5:33 PM to 8:09 PM |
| Dhanteras puja muhurat (Vrishabha Kaal) | 6:02 PM to 7:57 PM |
| Yama Deepam | 6 November (evening, after sunset) |

A caution on these numbers. Different panchangs disagree by a few minutes, and one popular source we checked starts the Lakshmi-Kuber muhurat at 6:17 PM instead of 6:02 PM. Neither is wrong. They use slightly different sunset and ascendant calculations. If you live outside Delhi, use the version for your city on our Mahurat page or your local temple calendar.
Pradosh Kaal is the window just after sunset, and Lakshmi puja is traditionally done then. Vrishabha Kaal is the part of that window when Taurus (Vrishabha) rises on the eastern horizon. Taurus is ruled by Venus, the planet linked with comfort, money and beauty, and the fixed nature of the sign is why many priests prefer it for a puja meant to bring lasting prosperity. It is a tradition, not a physics claim, and we say so plainly.
A Dhanteras puja at home needs a clean space, a lamp and sincere attention, not an expensive setup. Follow this order, and adjust it to your family's custom.

Yama Deepam is a single clay lamp lit outside the house on Dhanteras night, traditionally facing south, as a prayer for the safety and long life of the family. The usual practice is a four-faced or one-wick diya with mustard or sesame oil, kept outside the main door or in the courtyard after sunset. The festival's legend about Yamraj and a young prince is the origin of this custom. Drik Panchang lists it for 6 November, though it did not give one fixed minute in the page we read, so light it after the main puja while the evening is still young.

The accepted rule is simple: buy something new, and buy it with intention. It does not have to be gold.
Common choices in Indian homes include:
Things to skip are just as important. Do not buy iron or steel scrap, sharp knives or black items on Dhanteras if your family follows the traditional prohibition. Do not take a loan only to buy gold. Do not buy a gemstone because someone online said Dhanteras is "the best day" for it. Rubies, blue sapphires and other stones affect people differently, and we recommend them only after a chart check.

If you want astrology to guide your purchase more than the calendar does, look at the chart. In classical Vedic astrology, the 2nd house shows accumulated wealth and the 11th house shows income and gains. Jupiter and Venus are the two planets most linked with prosperity, though a strong Mercury helps with business and trade. Our explainer on the 12 houses in Vedic astrology shows how to read these houses, and our planetary doshas guide covers combinations that can block money flow in a chart. Texts like the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Phaladeepika discuss these houses in detail.
Here is where we disagree with a lot of festival content. Many sites imply that buying gold on one evening will "fix" a weak wealth house. It will not. A chart with a debilitated 2nd lord or a running Saturn period needs patient effort and honest advice. If you are in the middle of Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year phase, read our Shani Sade Sati guide before making any large purchase. Buying a coin is fine. Buying a flat on a festival impulse is a different decision, and no tithi changes that.
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| You must buy gold on Dhanteras or the year will be poor. | No text says this. Utensils, silver, a new puja item or even a notebook are accepted. |
| The puja only works at the exact minute of the muhurat. | The muhurat is the preferred window. A sincere puja done within Pradosh Kaal is considered fine, and a late puja is better than none. |
| Buying more means more blessings. | Tradition stresses intention and modest, clean buying. Spending beyond your means is the opposite of the festival's spirit. |
| Dhanteras is the same date every year. | It moves with the tithi. It was not on the same date last year and will not be next year. |
| Astrology can tell you which investment to make. | Astrology can describe periods of gain and caution. It cannot replace a financial adviser. |

Dhanteras 2026 timings differ by city because the muhurat follows local sunset, and sunset in Kolkata comes earlier than in Mumbai or Bengaluru. The 6:02 PM start we have given is for New Delhi and the surrounding NCR. Readers in Jaipur and Lucknow will see similar numbers, within a few minutes of Delhi. Mumbai and Bengaluru will see later starts, and Kolkata an earlier one. Do not copy a time from a friend in another city.
You do not have to visit a temple priest or an astrologer's office to check this. Online consultation works just as well. Many of our readers in Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kolkata and Bengaluru speak to our astrologers by call or chat, share their birth details and city, and get the correct local muhurat and a chart-based note on the day. If you are wondering how far a chart should guide a big decision, our piece on why people read their horoscope before important decisions is a fair place to start.
This is an illustrative case written by our team, not a real consultation.
Neha, a 31-year-old from Pune, wanted to use Dhanteras to buy her first gold chain. Her kundli showed Taurus ascendant with Venus in the 2nd house and Saturn's Mahadasha running. On paper, Taurus rising makes Vrishabha Kaal a natural fit. But her Saturn period meant slow, steady gains rather than a quick jump. Our advice in this kind of case would be to buy a small silver or gold coin within her budget, do the puja inside the muhurat, and put the larger investment off until her chart shows a stronger period. She did not need a gemstone. She needed a plan. That is the kind of detail a festival article cannot give you, and a chart can.
All of this depends on accurate birth details. If your birth time is off by even twenty minutes, the Ascendant can change, and with it the house placements we have discussed. A wrong lagna means a wrong reading. Before you rely on any chart-based advice, confirm your birth time from a hospital record or birth certificate where you can.

Yes. Trayodashi runs from 10:30 AM on 6 November to 10:47 AM on 7 November, and buying during this tithi is considered auspicious. Many families prefer the evening, close to the puja muhurat, but a daytime purchase is accepted in most traditions.
You can buy a steel or brass utensil, a small silver coin, a new broom, a puja item or even a book. Tradition values intention over price. Buying something new and bringing it home with a lamp and prayer fulfils the custom.

Yes, if you cannot make it in time. The muhurat is the preferred window, but a sincere puja at another time in the evening is better than skipping it. Keep the lamp and prayer, and do not worry about a missed few minutes.
None, unless your chart supports it. A gemstone works with the planets in your kundli, so the same stone can help one person and trouble another. Have your chart checked first. Dhanteras is a fine day to buy a coin, not to guess a stone.
